What size should your decal or sign be?
The most common question we get, answered in inches. These are the sign trade's working rules — measure your space, then check it against the case below.
What size decal fits a car or truck window?
For a rear side window, 4–6 inches wide is the sweet spot — visible without blocking the view. A rear windshield decal for a business name and phone number usually runs 12–20 inches wide. Truck door lettering reads well at 18–24 inches wide on a standard pickup door, sized to the flattest part of the panel. Measure the flat area first; curves and body lines eat more space than you expect.
What size for laptop and water bottle stickers?
Laptop stickers are almost always 2–4 inches on the long side — big enough to read, small enough to share the lid. Water bottle and tumbler stickers work best at 2–3 inches; anything wider has to bend around the curve, and past about 3 inches on a standard bottle the edges start to fight the radius. Helmet and hard hat stickers: 2 inches or under, on the flattest spot.
How big should storefront window lettering be?
The sign trade's working rule is about one inch of letter height per ten feet of viewing distance. Hours of operation on a door are read from arm's length, so 1–2 inch letters are plenty. A window logo meant to be noticed from the sidewalk wants 4–8 inches. Lettering that should read from across a parking lot or the street needs to be measured in feet — a 60-foot viewing distance means letters around 6 inches at minimum, and bolder is better than bigger.
What is the standard bumper sticker size?
The classic bumper sticker is about 10 × 3 inches, and it is the right default: readable at one car length without dominating the tailgate. Oval euro-style stickers are usually 4–6 inches wide. If your design is mostly text, wider and shorter beats square — height is what costs legibility at distance.
What size should a yard sign be?
The standard yard sign is 24 × 18 inches on an H-stake, and it is the right choice for real estate, elections, events and roadside promotions. For a busier road where cars pass at speed, 24 × 36 inches or a 4 × 8 foot sheet reads far better. Keep the message to a few words and the phone number large.
